Following up the report by CeaseFire Oregon at the January 17 meeting of Clackamas Democrats, fresh numbers from the non-partisan Pew Foundation show some 85 percent of all Americans, regardless of political party, favor subjecting gun buyers at gun shows and private sales to background checks prior to issuing the weapon. The reasoning is probably simple: Too many whackos are buying or otherwise are gaining access to guns.
This comes on the heels of yesterday’s testimony to Congress where Mark Kelly, husband of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, pointed out that smaller magazines could save lives, too. Her assailant felled Ms. Giffords with the first shot of ten in a magazine. The 10th struck and killed a six-year-old girl. Those shots were coming out every half a second. It took the shooter five seconds to shoot Ms. Giffords and the child. He was asking Congress not for a ban on automatic weapons, but for a limit on their magazine sizes.

The Jon Stewart show continued this past week to poke fun and seriously question NRA Executive Director, Wayne LaPierre’s opposition to background checks despite his being in favor of such action back in 1999. Seems the man can’t remember what he was for before he was against it!
